Archive Searches

Archives make available numerous documents for consultation. These are mostly not available online.

I regularly visit the following archives:

  • West Sussex Record Office
  • Portsmouth History Centre
  • Hampshire Record Office
  • Gloucestershire Record Office
  • Berkshire Record Office

On request I can also visit the National Archives at Kew and other record offices across the country.

Census Returns – this includes

  • 1841 to 1911 (Enumerated every 10 years)
  • 1921 Census – Released January 2022
  • 1939 Register

Civil Registration, Births, Deaths & Marriages

  • These are available from 1st July 1837

Parish Records

  • The Parish Chest holds a multitude of records from the Churchwarden Accounts through to Poor Law Records.

Parish Registers

  • Records of Baptism, Marriages and Burials can date back to 1538 in some parishes

Newspapers

  • Searching the Newspapers may yield other interesting details about your ancestors
